About Matt

As an assistant coach for Duke University from 2013-2017, LoPiccolo helped the Blue Devil sprinters see one of the most successful seasons in Duke history in 2015. The women’s 4x400 squad, comprised of Lauren Hansson, Elizabeth Kerpon, Madeline Kopp and Maddy Price, earned first team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships after racing to a sixth-place finish with a school-record time of 3:32.56. On the men’s side, Brett Bofinger also claimed first team All-America status as a member of the men’s distance medley relay that finished seventh at the national indoor meet. During the outdoor season, Bofinger joined Robert Rohner, Michael Wilson and Chaz Hawkins to set the program record in the 4x400, clocking a 3:09.21. Prior to Duke, LoPiccolo held the head coach track & field position at SUNY Oneonta University from 2000-13. During his tenure, LoPiccolo received a variety of coaching honors, including 2013 NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Men’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, 2013 State University New York Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, 2006 NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Women’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, and 2006 SUNYAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. Oneonta’s track & field program thrived under LoPiccolo’s tutelage. In just two years, LoPiccolo improved the University’s women’s indoor track & field team from a 25th-place finish at the Eastern College Athletics Conference meet in 2003 to ECAC champions the following year. The Red Dragons would repeat as ECAC champions in 2006 and finish the season with a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship meet. In 2013, LoPiccolo guided his men’s track & field team to an NCAA Division III sixth-place finish, the highest in school history. The men’s program won the SUNYAC Indoor Championship meet the same year. In addition to team accomplishments, individual performances have also improved while under LoPiccolo’s guidance. The former Oneonta coach led 41 student-athletes to Division III Track & Field All-America honors. LoPiccolo also qualified 114 individuals for the SUNYAC Track & Field Championship meet and 23 individuals for the ECAC Track & Field Championship meet. Most recently, LoPiccolo coached the fastest 200-meter runner in school history to two consecutive NCAA Division III individual national championships. LoPiccolo also placed a heavy emphasis on academics while coaching at Oneonta, as evidenced by the 22 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Individual Award Winners he has coached over his thirteen-year career. The 2006 season was an especially successful year in the classroom for LoPiccolo’s student-athletes, with an NCCA Woman of the Year Finalist, NCAA Top VIII Award Finalist, and a USTFCCCA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Student-Athlete of the Year. LoPiccolo earned a B.A. in mathematics from Plattsburgh State University of New York. In 1998, while working on an M.A. in Administration and Leadership, LoPiccolo earned All-American honors while competing for Plattsburgh in the 800-meters. In 2018, LoPiccolo was inducted in to the Plattsburgh State Athletic Hall of Fame.
