About Kirk

I started running in 1975 and ran my first sub-3 marathon at Penn Relays on 4/20/1980 while running for the University of Pittsburgh. I started my second running career in 2007 with the goal of running a sub-3 marathon on as little mileage as possible. 40, 45, and 50 miles per week yielded bonks before the 20 mile mark. Finally, in 2010 I averaged 55 miles per week, which yielded a breakthrough at the Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham, AL (3:00:06) with fuel left in the tank and poor clock/watch management. This was followed up with four successful sub-3 marathons after utilizing Daniels' Running Formula: Boston - 2011 - 2:59 Mercedes - 2012 - 2:59 Pittsburgh - 2013 - 2:59 California International Marathon - 2013 - 2:59

UPDATE: December 24, 2024 - I finally achieved my first Sub-3 marathon with a time of 2:58:23 at Valencia. A massive shoutout to Coach K, without whom this accomplishment would not have been possible. This is a personal record for me at age 48, and I accomplished it after three attempts. Many people had given up on me, but Coach K never did. He tailored my training plan to fit my running style, worked with me every week to fine-tune it based on my progress, and, most importantly, was always accessible. If you put in the work, Coach K will get you across the line and get you your Sub3 marathon goal.
