About Coach Kevin

I coached swimming when I was in college and have been coaching individual runners since 1997, mostly to qualify for the Boston Marathon. For the last 6 years, I’ve also coached age-group distance and cross-country runners as they compete at local, state, and national levels. I’m a competitive Masters runner, placing 3rd in my age group at the 2018 Los Angeles Marathon, 2nd in AG at the 2016 Long Beach Half, and winning my age group at the 2014 and 2019 Great Race of Agoura Half. One successful athlete said this after I coached her to a BQ: “Kevin, thanks so much for your coaching, scientific research, positive reinforcement and always bringing out that extra Nancy energy I didn’t know I had.” When I coached JJ through many issues to hit her 4-hour marathon goal including recovering from a fall on ice and overcoming both Krohn's and a torn hip labrum, she posted: "My watch said 3:54:09. Felt great! Thanks for all of your help!!!!"

Description

As Executive Race Director for the Women Run LA race series, I can help you reach your goal on the Bolsa Chica, Hansen Dam, and Oxnard Park courses that I set up. You'll receive a personalized training plan tailored for your current running ability and goals. More importantly, I will update your training plan as you progress and respond to the questions you ask in your personalized vdoto2 portal. Once a month, on Saturday mornings in the general vicinity of Calabasas, CA, I do in-person training for everyone signed up for this plan. That session includes work on running technique and form. The Saturday before the race, you can join a practice run on the actual course. Your subscription is good for a minimum of twelve weeks, which means I'll continue to work with you beyond race day if there are fewer than twelve weeks until the run. I may be most helpful to you AFTER you've run the race. There is nothing like the experience of racing to clarify for us how you can improve and better reach your health and fitness goals.

Minimum Requirements

You must have a running watch that communicates with the vdoto2 system and/or Strava.

Doing a hard workout without sufficient recovery is one reason Masters runners plateau and are more susceptible to injury. In his late 30s, Meb Keflezighi realized he could no longer get the most out of hard workouts on only one day's rest. Shifting to a 9-day cycle allowed two recovery days between hard workouts. Only with the extra rest could he get the full benefit from the hard tempo and interval days that he had squeezed into a single week as a young man. The result: Meb's 2014 Boston Marathon win.

Minimum Requirements

At or approaching masters runner status (age 40) with the flexibility to run hard workouts on any day of the week.

If you run the online workouts I provide at the paces I specify, in a less-stress, more-gain plan that minimizes setbacks from aches and injuries, you should make your Boston Qualifying time within four months to a year. I’ll tell you that timeframe after the first month, i.e., how long it might take you to BQ and how much of a stretch it will be. I’ll suggest the best venues for achieving your BQ and, once we’ve agreed, train you for that specific course. The downhill Revel courses? Maybe. We’ll see how easily your quads quiver. Long downhills aren’t for everyone. See my blog post on the subject. Training includes my suggestion for a local monthly race that shares characteristics with your BQ target. Racing is the best gauge of your progress. It’s also the best BQ workout you’ll get. After you’ve been with me for two months, I’ll give you simple instructions on how to have a friend shoot a running form video and email it. Once an adequate video arrives, I’ll analyze your form and make suggestions within ten days on how to achieve a more efficient stride. If you’re local to Los Angeles, I’ll invite you to join me monthly for in-person coaching. The guarantee, available only through VDOT? If you don’t make your BQ in the timeframe I gave you after one month in—whatever the cause—I’ll continue coaching you as above until you do.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of a previous marathon and your completion of a form and waiver on my website www.longlifemarathon.com.

I gave him a difficult task of finishing off months of training to help me reach very specific race goals. My race is next week but 2 weeks ago I really aced an interim race which showed significant progress in a short amount of time. I have worked with many coaches over the years and Kevin spent more time collecting information about me and my running to put together a comprehensive training plan targeted to my goals. He actually researched my races and their topology for race plans. Kevin has tons of experience and shares the valuable information he has gathered freely. I selected him because of his experiences. It was definitely the right choice.

I had a 32 minute PR in my marathon. He coached me through injuries, and adjusted my training as I needed it. He was very good at understanding my needs and supportive of my running. We communicated on a weekly basis on how things were going and made changes as needed. He was a great coach!
